Strategy 3:

Good Schools and Good Classrooms

Excellent schools and excellent teaching have always been a cornerstone of student success. Unfortunately, the focus is often on the "bad news," while the "good news" goes untold. The Grand Rapids Community Foundation has two programs that recognize and reward the good work that is being done in Grand Rapids' schools.

Meijer Good Schools for Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Community Foundation developed Meijer Good Schools for Grand Rapids as its signature program to reward schools for good performance and build support for schools in the City of Grand Rapids. Initial funding was provided by The Meijer Foundation. Gifts from the Mary I. and Robert C. Pew Donor Advised Fund and the Bank of America Charitable Foundation also supports the program.

Good Classrooms Minigrant Program

Formerly known as the Excellence in Education Program, Good Classrooms Minigrant Program awards grants to teachers—either individually or in teams--for classroom projects.

Since 1987, the program has awarded $1.3 million to Grand Rapids Public School teachers, as well as teachers at Catholic and Christian schools in the City of Grand Rapids.  Applications are available annually in August.
