Strategy 3:

Good Schools and Good Classrooms

Excellent schools and excellent teaching have always been a cornerstone of student success. Unfortunately, the focus is often on the "bad news," while the "good news" goes untold. Grand Rapids Community Foundation has two programs that recognize and reward the good work that is being done in Grand Rapids' schools.

Meijer Good Schools for Grand Rapids provides awards to elementary schools in the City of Grand Rapids that meet or exceed nine benchmarks for success.  To be considered, schools must meet standards for student achievement and attendance, while demonstrating excellence in leadership and educational vitality, data-driven decision-making, rigorous curriculum and instruction, and school culture.

The winning schools may use their Meijer Good Schools awards to fund professional development and training, parental and community involvement, field trips, and equipment and materials for students.

Meijer Good Schools for Grand Rapids is funded by the Meijer Foundation with support from Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the Mary I. and Robert C. Pew Donor Advised Fund.

Good Classrooms is a minigrant program that provides funds for projects that enhance learning, but are beyond the means of a school’s budget.  Teachers and students in Grand Rapids Public, Catholic and Christian Schools can apply for minigrants each year.  The awards range from $250 to $3,000 and can be used for new projects or programs, program enhancement or expansion, student awards, special events, professional development, field trips and parent involvement activities.

Here's a video about four of this year's Good Classroom Minigrant recipients.  See a full list of this year's minigrants here.

Applications are available annually in August.
